PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

One of the best ways to prevent colorectal cancer is through regular physical activity. You don’t have to be an athlete to stay active—just find something you enjoy and stick with it! Every little bit helps. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s lace up those sneakers, get moving, and take a step toward better health. Your body—and your colon—will thank you!

Mary’s Journey to a Healthier Life—See How Easy Staying Active Can Be!

Hey there! My name is Mary, and today we’re talking about a superpower you already have—movement! Did you know that staying active is one of the best things you can do to help lower your risk of colorectal cancer? Let’s get moving and learn how!

Why is Physical Activity Important?
'Move it to improve it!' Regular physical activity helps keep your body strong and your digestive system moving smoothly. It can lower inflammation, reduce insulin levels, and even help maintain a healthy weight—all of which can lower your cancer risk.

How Much Should You Move?
'Every step counts!' Here’s the goal:

  • Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, like brisk walking, dancing, or gardening. That’s just 30 minutes a day, five days a week!

  • If you’re up for a challenge, try 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, like running, swimming, or cycling. You can even mix moderate and vigorous activities!

What Counts as Physical Activity?
'If it gets your heart pumping, it counts!' Here are some fun ideas:

  • Take a walk after meals to help with digestion.

  • Play tag with the kids or try a dance video at home.

  • Swap the elevator for the stairs or park further away to sneak in extra steps.

  • Stretch, do yoga, or try strength training to keep your body flexible and strong.

Break Up Long Sitting Times
'Don’t be a couch potato!' Even if you exercise, sitting for too long can be harmful. Try standing up and moving for a few minutes every hour.

Make it Fun and Social
'Find your groove!' Invite a friend or family member to join you for a walk, bike ride, or a fun fitness class. Having a buddy makes it easier to stay motivated.
